Old Dates, New Dates...

The English treated March 25 as the start of the new year (hey, late March was springtime!) until 1752. Then England adopted the "New Style" calendar used by continental Europe since 1582.

Pope Gregory XIII stimulated adoption of the "New Style" calendar on the continent in 1582, but his influence at that time was diminished by the ongoing disputes between Catholic Spain/France and Protestant England. (Remember, Elizabeth I's father, Henry VIII, has rejected the leadership of the Pope in order to obtain his first divorce.)

English events that occurred between January 1 and March 25 are noted by historians with peculiar description of the year, like "February 1, 1661/62" or February 11 (OS)" (for Old Style). Dates after 1752 don't have that confusion, of course.
