While Brunswick County south of the James was slow to grow compared to the Rappahannock watershed, it did slowly increase in population until too many settlers were inconvenienced by the long ride to the courthouse. Lunenburg County was created in 1745. The name honors King George II, who was Duke of Brunswick-Lunenburg.
