Pope Gregory XIII stimulated adoption of the "New Style" calendar on the continent in 1582, but his influence at that time was diminished by the ongoing disputes between Catholic Spain/France and Protestant England. (Remember, Elizabeth I's father, Henry VIII, has rejected the leadership of the Pope in order to obtain his first divorce.)
English events that occurred between January 1 and March 25 are noted by historians with peculiar description of the year, like "February 1, 1661/62." Dates after 1752 don't have that confusion, of course.
