The dark color of the Blackwater River reflects the high percentage of tannins and organic material dissolved in the river. There is little light-colored sandy sediment suspended in the water, where it flows slowly across the Coastal Plain. Similar to the blackest large blackwater river in the world, a tributary of the Congo River called the Ruki River, the water in the Blackwater River is essentially "swamp tea."1
