Chesapeake Bay from Landsat 7

Chesapeake Bay

After the glaciers melted at the end of the last ice age, the continental shelf and then the river valleys of the Susquehanna and James rivers were flooded by rising sea levels.

About 3,000 years ago, the Chesapeake Bay finally looked like what we see today. Native Americans were in the region for perhaps 10,000 years before that, so humans saw the landscape change dramatically.
